Phyllis Crossan
It is with heartfelt sorrow that we announce the passing and remember and give thanks for Phyllis Crossan, our friend and colleague whose devotion to the memory of David Livingstone and local history has left a lasting mark on both the museum she loved and the local area she lived.
Phyllis held a profound respect for the stories of the past—not as distant tales, but as living threads that shape who we are today. Her passion found its deepest expression in her connection to the birthplace of David Livingstone, a site she felt drawn to not only for its history, but through its spirituality from which she took great comfort. For Phyllis, the centre felt like her life’s work not only due to its historical importance but for the inspiration it offered to future generations. She believed that Livingstone’s life of courage, exploration, and compassion echoed in the very soil of his beginnings—and she made it her mission to help others hear that echo too.
Through her unwavering support of the David Livingstone Centre, Phyllis helped bring that vision to life. Her contributions—both seen and unseen—strengthened the museum’s capacity to educate, inspire, and preserve. Whether through inspiring volunteers and staff, guiding historical interpretation, or simply sharing stories with visitors, she brought warmth and wisdom to everything she touched.
Phyllis gave generously of her time, resources, and spirit—always seeking not recognition, but results that mattered. Her legacy within the David Livingstone Trust will live on for many many years. Her love for place, for people, and for purpose will continue to ripple through the lives she touched, the causes she championed, and the history she so dearly honoured.
We give thanks for her life, her passion, and her presence. She is deeply missed—but never forgotten.
Funeral will be held on Monday 21st July 2025 at 10am at South Lanarkshire Crematorium.
